1KD Injector Replacement Cost in Australia (2026) — Hilux & Prado
If you're reading this, there's a fair chance you're holding a quote for injectors on your Hilux or Prado. Maybe it says $1,800. Maybe it says $5,500. Both numbers get handed to 1KD owners every week for what sounds like the same job, and nobody explains where the difference comes from.
Our position up front: we're not a workshop. We sell genuine Denso 1KD injectors, test injectors on a Hartridge Sabre CRi Expert bench, and build performance nozzles. We don't sell labour hours, which means we've got no reason to pad the job and no reason to talk you out of one. What we can do is show you exactly what the parts cost (our prices are public), how labour is actually calculated, and how to use those two numbers to check any quote line by line, whether your mechanic does the job, you supply the parts, or you do it yourself.
What's actually inside a 1KD injector quote
Every quote is four things stacked on top of each other:
- Parts: the injectors themselves, plus the one-use hardware around them: seat washers, seals, injector lines. The biggest and most variable line item.
- Labour: book hours multiplied by the shop's hourly rate. Transparent maths once you know both numbers.
- Diagnosis: the time spent confirming injectors are actually the problem. Worth paying for when it's done properly; a rip-off when it's a guess with an invoice attached.
- Coding: 1KD injectors carry individual trim codes (11, 13 or 18 characters depending on your engine's generation) that must be written to the ECU. If a quote doesn't mention coding, ask why.
Parts: the numbers you can check right now
Every price below is a live product you can click, not an estimate:
| Full set of four genuine Denso injectors (correct 11/13/18 code for your engine, new, individual trim codes supplied) | $2,199 |
| Genuine fitting kit (every seat washer, seal and O-ring for the job, plus rocker cover gaskets) | ~$250 |
| One-use injector lines (Euro 3 or Euro 4 kit depending on your injector code) | see the kit for your engine |
So genuine parts for a complete, done-properly 1KD injector job land around $2,500 to $2,700 including GST. Any quote whose parts line is dramatically above that is marking up parts you could supply yourself. Any quote dramatically below it is not fitting new genuine injectors, whatever the invoice says. More on that in the red flags section.
Labour: it's just a formula
Injector replacement on a 1KD means rocker cover off, one-use lines out and replaced, injectors out (sometimes stubborn if a seat has been leaking), new seats and seals in, torque to spec, and codes written to the ECU. Most workshops book it at roughly 3 to 5 hours. Australian workshop charge-out rates in 2026 typically run $120 to $200 per hour: independents mostly sit in the $120 to 150s, specialist diesel shops and dealers from the $160s up past $200.
That puts honest labour at roughly $400 to $1,000. If your quote's labour line is $1,800, either the rate is dealer-level, they've allowed extra time for seized injectors (a real thing on engines with leaking seats, so ask them), or the quote is padded. Now you know which question to ask.
Already have a quote? Here's how to use it
A quote isn't a contract, it's an opening position, and now you can read it. Three moves:
- Check the parts line against the prices above. If the quote wants $3,500+ for a genuine set you can buy for $2,199, say so. Plenty of workshops will match a documented parts price rather than lose the labour.
- Supply the parts yourself. Most independent workshops are happy to fit a customer-supplied genuine set: they still get their labour, you get certainty about exactly what's going into your engine. Order the coded set and fitting kit, hand them over with the trim codes, and you're paying parts-at-cost plus honest labour. (Fair's fair: the workshop warrants their labour, and the parts warranty sits with us. That's how it should work.)
- Ask what the diagnosis was. If the answer is a shrug, get the injectors tested before you approve a four-injector bill. Next section.
The option most quotes leave out: test before you replace
Here's the thing nobody selling four injectors and five hours of labour is incentivised to say: it is often not all four. Injectors fail individually. A drifting feedback value or a miss on one cylinder does not mean the other three are done.
Our 1KD injector testing service runs all four of your injectors through a full test plan on a Hartridge Sabre CRi Expert (the same class of bench Denso-authorised shops use) and gives you a written report per injector, measured against Denso spec, for $549. You'll know exactly which injectors are out of spec and by how much, instead of paying to replace parts that were still healthy.
When does testing first make sense? When the truck is driveable, symptoms are gradual (feedback drift, mild smoke, uneven idle), or the quote you're holding condemns all four without evidence. When doesn't it? When an injector has already holed a piston or the engine is undriveable: at that point the injectors are coming out regardless.
What the whole job costs: the honest scenarios
| Test first, replace only what fails | $549 testing + R&R labour + only the injectors actually out of spec. Frequently the cheapest path to a properly fixed engine. |
| You supply the parts, your workshop fits them | ~$2,500 to 2,700 in parts + 3 to 5 hours labour ≈ $2,900 to 3,700 all-in, with zero doubt about what went in. |
| DIY, full genuine set | ~$2,500 to 2,700 in parts, a weekend, and the right info. See the DIY section below. |
| Workshop supplies and fits everything | Roughly $3,100 to 4,000 at honest rates once parts markup is included. Quotes far above this deserve a line-by-line explanation. |
| Tuned or building for power | +30% / +50% modified genuine Denso injectors from $3,149, built on new bodies, bench tested, flow matched and individually coded from measured data. |
Doing it yourself
The 1KD injector job is well within reach of a competent home mechanic, and it's the single biggest saving available: the entire labour line stays in your pocket. What you need to get right:
- Torque specs. Injector clamps, lines and the rocker cover all have specs that matter. They're all in our 1KD torque specification guide.
- New everything that's one-use. Seats, seals, washers, lines. The fitting kit covers the lot. Reused copper seats are how 1KDs end up with sludged sumps.
- Writing the codes. Each injector ships with its trim code; you need a scan tool capable of writing injector codes to a Toyota ECU (Techstream or an aftermarket tool with injector coding support). Without the codes written, the job isn't finished.
If you get partway in and want a second opinion, we're a phone call away. Helping people fit what we sell is part of the deal.
Red flags in injector quotes
- "Reconditioned" or "cleaned and tested" injectors at near-new prices. Ultrasonic cleaning and a pop test is not remanufacturing. If old internals are going back in your engine, the price should say so, and so should the workshop.
- Suspiciously cheap "genuine Denso" sets. Counterfeit Denso injectors are a genuine and growing problem in Australia. If a set costs less than the trade price of the real thing, it isn't the real thing.
- No mention of coding. Uncoded injectors run on ECU averages, defeating the point of individual trim codes.
- No new seats, seals or lines. These are one-use parts. If the fitting kit isn't on the quote, it isn't being done, and a reused seat is how a 1KD blocks its oil pickup.
- All four condemned with no test data. "They're all stuffed, mate" is a diagnosis when it comes with feedback values or a bench report. Otherwise it's a sales pitch.
Why quotes for the "same job" range from $1,800 to $5,500
Now you can decode it: the $1,800 quote is fitting something other than new genuine injectors, skipping the fitting kit, or both. The $5,500 quote is dealer rates, big parts markup, padded hours, or all three. The honest middle (new genuine coded set, full fitting kit, new lines, 3 to 5 hours of competent labour) sits in the low-to-mid $3,000s, and the maths above lets you check any quote line by line. Supply the parts yourself or do the job in the shed and you're closer to $2,500 to 2,700. Every part named in this guide lives in our full range of 1KD injectors & fuel system parts if you want to price the whole job in one place.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace 1KD injectors in Australia?
A done-properly job with a new genuine coded set, full fitting kit and new lines costs roughly $3,100 to 4,000 at a workshop, $2,900 to 3,700 if you supply the parts, or around $2,500 to 2,700 in parts if you fit them yourself. Bench testing first ($549) often reduces the bill by identifying which injectors are actually out of spec.
How much does diesel injector replacement cost generally?
The anatomy is the same on any common rail diesel (injector set, one-use fitting hardware, 3 to 5 hours labour at $120 to 200/hr, and ECU coding), so a four-cylinder job typically lands between $2,500 and $4,500 in Australia depending on the platform, who supplies the parts, and who turns the spanners.
Can I supply my own injectors to a workshop?
Usually, yes: most independents will fit customer-supplied genuine parts. The workshop warrants their labour and the parts warranty sits with the supplier. Order the correct-code set for your engine, hand over the injectors with their trim codes, and confirm the workshop will write the codes to the ECU as part of the job.
Do I need to replace all four injectors at once?
Not automatically. Injectors fail individually, and a bench test tells you exactly which ones are out of spec. Replacing the full set on a high-kilometre engine can be a reasonable call, but it should be a decision made with test data, not a default you're billed for.
Can I fit 1KD injectors myself?
Yes, with care: correct torque specs, new seats, seals and lines every time, and a scan tool that can write injector trim codes to the Toyota ECU. Without coding the job is not complete.
Is it worth testing injectors before replacing them?
If the vehicle is driveable and symptoms are gradual, almost always. A bench report per injector against Denso spec turns "replace all four just in case" into a measured decision, and frequently pays for itself in the first injector you don't need to buy.
