Upgrade your 1GD-FTV with the Flex 43mm Journal Bearing Turbo Upgrade – engineered for serious torque, power, and reliability. This premium turbo delivers up to 35psi boost with proven journal bearing technology. Includes the intake pipe for Gen 2 to Gen 3 conversion, making this a complete bolt-on solution for your N80 Hilux or Fortuner.
⚠️ Electronic Actuator NOT Included: This turbo requires an electronic actuator which is sold separately. Electronic actuators available here – contact us if you need assistance selecting the correct actuator.
Gen 2 vs Gen 3 Explanation: This is a Gen 3 turbo design, which has a different intake configuration than Gen 2 models. The included intake pipe allows this upgrade to bolt onto Gen 2 models (2015-2020 N80 Hilux/Fortuner).
⚠️ Pre-IART Models Only: This turbo suits 2015–2020 models WITHOUT the IART injection system. If your vehicle has IART (2020+ models), this turbo will not fit. Contact us if unsure.
Turbocharger specifications:
⚠️ Tuning Recommendation: Custom ECU remap strongly recommended to safely maximise gains and prevent limp mode. Supporting mods (high-flow airbox, intercooler, 3" exhaust) recommended for best results.
Why Journal Bearing?
What you'll need:
Recommended supporting modifications:
For Maximum Power Output (240+ HP): Factory fuel system is the limiting factor. To achieve the full potential of this turbo, a stroker pump and +30% injectors/nozzles are essential upgrades – without these, power gains will plateau well below the turbo's capability.
⚠️ Installation: Turbo replacement requires mechanical knowledge. Professional installation recommended. Ensure proper oil priming procedure is followed during installation.
Q: Is the electronic actuator included?
A: No, the electronic actuator is sold separately. We have them available – contact us to ensure you order the correct actuator for this turbo.
Q: What's the difference between journal bearing and ball bearing turbos?
A: Journal bearings use oil-cooled sleeve bearings (OEM standard), while ball bearings use ceramic/steel ball bearings. Journal bearings are more durable for high-boost applications and towing, while ball bearings spool slightly faster. Both are excellent – it depends on your priorities.
Q: Will this fit my 2021+ Hilux with IART?
A: No – this turbo only suits Pre-IART models (2015–2020). If your vehicle has IART, this turbo will not be a suitable upgrade.
Q: Do I need the intake pipe if I have a Gen 2 model?
A: Yes, the intake pipe is included and required for Gen 2 models. This is a Gen 3 turbo design, so Gen 2 vehicles need the adapter pipe to bolt it on.
Q: Do I need tuning after installing this turbo?
A: Yes – custom ECU tuning is essential. This turbo can produce up to 35psi boost, which is significantly higher than factory levels (~17psi). Without proper tuning, you risk engine damage.
Q: What power gains can I expect?
A: With supporting mods (airbox, intercooler, exhaust, injectors/nozzles) and quality tuning, this turbo supports 240+ HP. For maximum output, stroker pump and +30% nozzles are required.
Q: Is everything included for installation?
A: The turbo and intake pipe are included, along with gaskets and mounting hardware. You will need to purchase an electronic actuator separately. Contact us if you need help selecting the correct actuator.
Q: How does this compare to the stock 1GD turbo?
A: The 43mm compressor wheel is larger than stock, providing significantly more airflow. Combined with 35psi boost capability (vs ~17psi stock), this represents a major performance increase.
Q: Can I run this turbo on stock boost?
A: Yes, but you won't see the full benefits. This turbo is designed for higher boost levels. With a custom tune, you can run anywhere from stock boost up to 35psi depending on your supporting modifications.
Q: What oil do I need for journal bearings?
A: Use high-quality diesel engine oil as per Toyota specifications. Journal bearings rely on oil for cooling and lubrication, so regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 km) are essential for longevity.
