Why is the factory plastic rocker cover such a problem on 1KDs?
The 1KD runs hot, and the factory plastic cover wasn't built to last. After years of heat cycling it becomes brittle, warps around the bolt holes, and starts weeping oil — usually down the back of the head where it pools around the injectors and soaks everything underneath. It's one of the most common issues on high-kilometer 1KDs. The plastic doesn't recover once it's warped, so no amount of retorquing or gasket replacement fixes it for long. Cast aluminium doesn't warp. Full stop.
Can I just replace the gasket and reuse my plastic cover?
You can, but if your cover has been leaking for a while, the plastic around the bolt holes is likely already deformed. A new gasket might buy you a few months, but it'll leak again — usually sooner than you'd like. If you're pulling the cover off anyway, it's the perfect time to upgrade and never deal with it again.
How hard is it to fit?
Straightforward job for anyone with basic mechanical ability. It mounts to the same bolt pattern as the factory cover — no modifications, no drilling, no surprises. The main thing to remember is don't torque the bolts — tighten by feel only.
Does it come with all the seals I need?
Yes — the kit includes the rocker cover gasket and injector seals to get it fitted straight away. If you want genuine Toyota seals rather than aftermarket, you can add the genuine fitting kit using the buttons above.
Will it suit my setup if I'm running a tune or towing heavy?
Absolutely. Aluminium handles heat better than plastic, so it's actually more at home on a worked 1KD than the factory cover ever was. Plenty of our customers are running tunes, lift kits, and big tow setups — the cover handles it without issue.
Will it fit both Hilux and Prado?
Yes — it fits any non-DPF 1KD-FTV. That covers Hilux N70 (2005–2015) and Prado (2003–2015) running the 1KD. If you're unsure whether yours is non-DPF, check the engine bay or your VIN — pre-2015 1KDs are almost always non-DPF. if you're unsure send us a message.
