Toyota Genuine R151F 3rd-4th Gear Synchro Hub
33362-60031 Fully Splined | Hilux N70 5-Speed Manual | 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV
Genuine Toyota No.2 transmission clutch hub for the R151F 5-speed manual in the N70 Hilux. This is the 3rd-4th synchro hub, and it is the known weak point behind the classic N70 failure where 3rd and 4th disappear completely: the splines strip, the hub spins on the mainshaft, the lever still goes into the gate but the box drives like neutral. Critically, this is the fully splined 33362-60031 hub. The original hub was splined, but only around part of its circumference with blank sections between, so all the drive runs through a reduced spline contact area. This version is splined the full way around, spreading the load across the entire hub-to-shaft interface.
Symptoms Of A Failed 3-4 Hub
- Sudden total loss of 3rd and 4th. The lever selects the gate normally but the vehicle drives like it is in neutral. 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse keep working.
- Stiff or binding shifts between 3rd and 4th in the lead-up, often getting worse over weeks before it lets go.
- Jumping out of 4th under load, sometimes with minimal grinding when it finally fails.
- Little to no debris on the drain plug magnet. The hub is not a rotating wear joint, so it can strip without leaving the usual metal evidence.
Why The Fully Splined Hub Matters
- The original hub was only partially splined. It had splines, but only around part of the circumference, with blank unsplined sections between. All drive in 3rd and 4th runs through that reduced spline contact area.
- Less contact area means the splines strip. Under sustained torque, especially on tuned 1KDs, the partial engagement overloads the splines that are there. They strip and the hub spins on the mainshaft.
- This hub is splined the full way around. 33362-60031 carries complete 360-degree internal splines, spreading the same drive load across far more contact area.
- Do not repeat the failure. If your box is apart for a stripped 3-4 hub, going back together with a partially splined hub is asking to do the job twice. Fit the fully splined version.
What It Does
- Splines the 3-4 synchro assembly to the mainshaft. All drive in 3rd and 4th passes through this hub, which is why a stripped hub kills both gears at once.
- Genuine Toyota replacement. Correct spline fit and material, made in Japan. On a part that failed by stripping its splines, genuine is the only sensible way to go back together.
- The part to have on the bench before the box comes apart. Inspect the mainshaft splines while you are in there; a hub that let go late can take the shaft with it.
Fitment
- Toyota Hilux N70. KUN16 and KUN26 with the R151F 5-speed manual, 1KD-FTV 3.0L and 2KD-FTV 2.5L D-4D, 2005 to 2015.
- Wider Toyota fitment. The same hub is catalogued across Hilux, LandCruiser Prado, Hiace, Fortuner, Dyna and Innova gearboxes on 1KD, 2KD, 1KZ, 1HZ, 5L and 1TR/2TR platforms. Confirm against your part number before ordering for anything other than an N70.
- Part number. 33362-60031, catalogued by Toyota as Hub, Transmission Clutch, No.2. Fully splined version.
Not sure it is the hub? If the lever goes into the 3-4 gate but nothing drives, it almost always is. SMS 0483 930 906 with your symptoms and we will talk it through before you order.
What Is Included
- 1 x genuine Toyota No.2 transmission clutch hub 33362-60031, fully splined. New in Toyota packaging.
Sold as the hub only. Synchro rings, sleeve, keys and springs are separate part numbers; if the box is coming apart, it is worth refreshing the 3-4 synchro components at the same time.
Fitting Notes
- Difficulty: advanced. The gearbox has to come out and be stripped to the mainshaft. This is a job for someone set up for gearbox work.
- Inspect the mainshaft splines before reassembly. A stripped hub can damage the shaft, and a new hub on a worn shaft will not last.
- Replace the 3-4 synchro rings and inspect the sleeve while the box is apart. Fresh oil on reassembly, Toyota spec or a quality GL4 75W-90.
Shipping and Payment
- Free express shipping Australia-wide.
- Dispatch: orders placed before 2 PM AEST on a business day go out the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My N70 just lost 3rd and 4th but every other gear works. Is this the part?
A: Almost certainly. The 3-4 synchro hub stripping its splines is the known failure that takes out exactly those two gears together. The hub spins on the mainshaft, so the lever selects the gate but no drive gets through.
Q: Is this the fully splined hub?
A: Yes. 33362-60031 is the fully splined version with complete 360-degree internal splines. The original hub was splined only around part of its circumference with blank sections between, and that reduced contact area is what overloads and strips. This is the part you replace it with.
Q: Were there warning signs I missed?
A: Usually. Most failures are preceded by the 3-4 shift going tight or binding, or the box jumping out of 4th. Some let go with no warning at all.
Q: Can I just fit the hub, or should I do the synchros too?
A: The hub fixes the failure, but with the box already stripped to the mainshaft it is false economy not to fit new 3-4 synchro rings and inspect the sleeve and keys while you are there.
Q: Will there be metal in the oil if the hub has stripped?
A: Often very little. The hub is splined to the shaft rather than being a rotating wear surface, so it can strip without leaving much on the magnet. A clean magnet does not rule it out.
Q: Is this genuine or aftermarket?
A: Genuine Toyota, made in Japan, in Toyota packaging.
