1KD Billet Oil Cooler Upgrade
FuseTech Performance | Two-Piece CNC Billet Aluminium | Hilux N70, Prado 120 / 150, HiAce
The factory 1KD oil cooler is a cast unit that cracks with heat cycling, and when it goes it puts coolant in your oil. The FuseTech two-piece billet oil cooler replaces it with a CNC-machined aluminium core and cap, sealed with genuine Toyota gaskets, on the factory mounting points. Runs cooler oil under load, and it does not crack.

Replaces the oil cooler only. The factory oil filter housing stays. Not sure? Add your VIN or State and Rego to the order notes and we will confirm before dispatch.
What's in the Box
- FuseTech two-piece billet aluminium oil cooler (core and cap, CNC machined, anodised)
- Genuine Toyota oil cooler housing gasket (housing to block)
- 2 x genuine Toyota oil cooler gaskets (cooler to housing)
- 4 x mounting studs
This cooler is a two-piece billet assembly, a machined core and a machined cap, not a one-piece casting. That is what makes it strong and serviceable. It also means the cooler has oil and coolant passing through the same block, separated by machined faces and seals, exactly like the factory unit. Every oil cooler on every engine can cross-contaminate if it is fitted poorly, and this one is no different. Do the checks below and you will never have a problem.
- Clean faces. Housing face and block face spotless before the new gaskets go on. Old gasket residue is the number one cause of a weep.
- Torque to spec. Evenly, in sequence, to Toyota figures. Do not guess.
- First start, then check. Run to temperature, shut down, let it cool. Pull the dipstick and look for milky oil. Open the radiator cap and look for an oil film on the coolant.
- Check again after the first drive. Same two checks after the first proper heat cycle, and again at the first 500 km. Retorque.
- Anything off, stop. Milky oil or oil in the coolant means a seal or face is not sitting right. Pull it, clean, re-seal, refit. Do not keep driving it.
Ten minutes of checking protects a $500 cooler and a $10,000 engine. It is the customer's responsibility to confirm there is no coolant-to-oil or oil-to-coolant transfer after installation.
Why Billet Over Factory
- No cast cracks. Machined from solid billet. The thermal-cycle fracture that kills factory coolers is engineered out.
- Better heat transfer. Billet aluminium and machined flow paths move heat out of the oil faster than the factory casting, which matters most when towing, in low range or on a tuned engine.
- Serviceable. Two-piece design can be split, cleaned and re-sealed instead of thrown away.
- Anodised. Corrosion resistant in the coolant and in the engine bay.
- Factory fit. Same mounting points, same coolant connections, genuine Toyota gaskets.
Installation
Difficulty: moderate. Coolant and oil system work. Allow 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Basic hand tools, drain pans, torque wrench.
- Engine cold. Drain the cooling system.
- Remove the factory oil cooler and gaskets. Clean the housing and block faces.
- Fit the FuseTech cooler to the housing with the new gaskets and studs, then the housing to the block with the new housing gasket. Torque to Toyota spec.
- Reconnect coolant lines. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
- Start briefly, then drain and refill the engine oil with a new filter.
- Run the leak checks in the panel above.
Current batch: you may need to lightly open out the housing holes to suit the studs. Check before you start.
Good time for: a coolant flush and fresh coolant, and a look at the thermostat while the system is drained.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it a direct bolt-on?
A: Yes. Factory mounting points and coolant connections, supplied with genuine Toyota gaskets and new studs. The current batch may need the housing holes lightly opened out.
Q: What does two-piece mean?
A: A machined core and a machined cap bolted together, rather than one cast lump. Stronger, serviceable, and it demands clean faces and correct torque on install.
Q: Can it mix oil and coolant?
A: Any oil cooler can if it is fitted badly, factory included. Fit it clean, torque it properly and do the leak checks above. That is all it takes.
Q: Does it replace the oil filter housing?
A: No. Cooler only. The filter housing stays factory.
Q: Worth it on a tuned 1KD?
A: More so. More fuel means more heat in the oil. This is where billet cooling earns its keep.
Q: Can I fit it myself?
A: If you are comfortable with coolant work and own a torque wrench, yes. Otherwise get a workshop to do it and ask them to sign off the leak checks.
