Proven Journal-Bearing Design
This replacement turbo runs a fully-floating journal-bearing cartridge (CHRA) β the same time-proven architecture used in the overwhelming majority of OEM diesel VNT turbochargers, including every pre-2020 Toyota 1GD and 1KD unit. Journal bearings ride on a full film of engine oil, which gives them excellent shaft damping, strong tolerance of heat soak and hard work, and a simple, serviceable design that's straightforward to inspect and rebuild.
Being upfront: the factory 2020+ unit uses a ball-bearing cartridge. This journal-bearing replacement is the honest, cost-effective alternative β a proven design at a fraction of the genuine price, well suited to stock or lightly tuned vehicles. If you're after the genuine ball-bearing unit, get in touch and we can quote one.
Why Replace With This Unit?
- Quality without the genuine price tag β a fraction of the cost of an OEM replacement from the dealer.
- No tuning required β installs as a straight swap and runs on the factory calibration.
- Complete assembly β supplied with the electronic VNT actuator fitted, not a bare cartridge.
- No exchange games β brand new unit, keep your old core, no waiting on a rebuild.
- Real support β we run diesel fuel and boost gear all day, every day. Text us your VIN and talk to someone who actually knows the 1GD platform.
Fitting Notes
Turbo failures are almost always a symptom, not a cause. Before fitting, identify why the original unit failed β oil supply, contamination, over-boost from a tune, or a blocked DPF will kill a new turbo just as quickly. We strongly recommend:
- Replace the turbo oil feed line and fit a new oil filter with fresh oil
- Prime the turbo with clean oil before first start
- Inspect the intake tract and intercooler for oil or debris from the old unit
- Confirm the DPF is not restricted
- Fitting to a 2015β2020 (130kW) 1GD? You must run the facelift-model intake pipe
- Installation by a qualified technician β the VNT actuator may require a scan-tool relearn/calibration on some vehicles
FAQ
Will this fit my 2018 Hilux?
Yes β as an upsize. The 17201-11120 can be fitted to 2015 β mid 2020 (130kW) 1GD engines as a factory-style upgrade, but it requires the facelift-model intake pipe. Your direct stock replacement is 17201-11080. For a genuine performance gain we'd steer you to the Flex Pro 43mm VNT instead.
Does it need a tune?
No. On a 2020-on 150kW vehicle this is a plug-and-play stock replacement that runs on the factory calibration β no ECU work required.
Is this a genuine Toyota turbo?
No, this is a new aftermarket replacement built to suit the 17201-11120 / 17201-11110 application, at a fraction of the genuine price. We're upfront about exactly what you're buying.
Does it come with the actuator?
Yes β supplied as a complete assembly with the electronic VNT actuator.
