Ford Ranger & BT-50 3.2L Injectors — The Complete P5AT Guide
The 3.2L P5AT five-cylinder in the Ford Ranger PX-series and Mazda BT-50 is one of the most common diesels on Australian roads, and its injectors are one of its most common big-ticket repairs. This guide covers the failure symptoms, how to confirm it's actually the injectors before spending thousands, the one part-number trap that catches people out constantly, and how to do the job properly so your new set lasts.
Symptoms of failing P5AT injectors
- Rough idle, with the engine hunting up and down at a standstill
- Hard cold-starting — particularly the first start of the day
- Black or grey smoke under acceleration
- Misfire codes and a noticeable diesel knock
- Higher-than-normal fuel consumption
- In the worst case, a stuck-open injector: loud knocking, diesel washing into the sump, and real risk of piston damage if you keep driving it
These injectors run at over 1,800 bar, so they're unforgiving of poor fuel. Water contamination is the single biggest killer, followed by particulate contamination from neglected filter changes and plain old worn tips and hardened internal seals at high kilometres. If one injector has failed from contamination at 200,000+ km, the other four are usually not far behind — which is why the P5AT is almost always done as a full set of five.
Confirm it before you spend
Several cheaper faults mimic dying injectors, so work through this before ordering a set:
- Rule out the basics. Fuel filter condition first — and check the filter bowl for water. If contamination killed the running quality, new injectors into a dirty system just die again.
- Rule out the SCV. The suction control valve on the high-pressure pump produces near-identical symptoms when it wears (erratic rail pressure, hunting idle, limp mode). We've covered diagnosing it separately in our P4AT/P5AT SCV guide — target and actual rail pressure should track each other closely on live data; erratic or diverging pressure points at the pump side, not the injectors.
- Watch cranking rail pressure. As a rule of thumb, a common-rail engine needs roughly 25–30 MPa (4,000–5,000 psi) of rail pressure within a few seconds of cranking before it will fire. If pressure builds slowly or won't get there, suspect excessive injector back-leak or a weak high-pressure pump — extended cranking when hot is the classic back-leak tell, because thinner hot fuel leaks past worn internals faster.
- Find the offending cylinder. On a scan tool (Ford IDS or FORScan), look at the per-cylinder fuel corrections at warm idle — the ECU trimming one cylinder much harder than the rest is pointing at your problem injector. A comparative leak-off test (graduated tubes on each injector return, engine warm) confirms it: the injector returning noticeably more fuel than its neighbours is the worn one. Always test warm — cold, thick fuel masks worn injectors and gives false passes.
The trap: early vs late part numbers
The 3.2L injector changed part number at the 05/2015 facelift, and the wrong one will not code to the ECU:
- Early — BK2Q-9K546-AG (A2C59517051): Ranger PX MkI (10/2011–05/2015) and BT-50 UP (11/2011–08/2015). Genuine early set here.
- Late — CK4Q-9K546-AA (A2C8139490080): Ranger PXII/PXIII (05/2015–2022) and BT-50 UR (09/2015 on) — the DPF-era cars. Genuine late set here.

VDO, Continental or Schaeffler — which brand is genuine?
All of them, at different points in time. The original equipment injector supplier for the P5AT started as Siemens VDO, was bought by Continental in 2007, spun off as Vitesco Technologies in 2021, and merged into Schaeffler in 2024. Same factory, same part — just new names on the box, and current stock now arrives in Schaeffler Vitesco green-and-white packaging with Vitesco-format part numbers (562 0006 10 for the late injector, 562 0022 10 for the early). Both sets we stock are brand new genuine OE injectors, sometimes also supplied in Mopar OEM boxes.
Doing the job properly
Three things separate a set that lasts from a comeback:
- Code all five injectors to the ECU. Each injector carries a unique calibration code that must be programmed in (via IDS or FORScan) for correct fuel trim. Skip it and you'll chase rough running forever.
- Replace the high-pressure lines if they're old. Steel injector lines degrade internally with age and kilometres, and the debris travels straight into your brand-new injectors under rail pressure. It's cheap insurance on a high-km truck.
- New seals and hardware, clean bores. Contamination during fitment is a leading cause of early failure. If the old set died from water in the fuel, flush the system and fit a new filter — otherwise the new set inherits the same fate.
