D-MAX Injectors by Year — The Complete 4JJ1 & 4JJ3 Guide
Ask for "D-MAX injectors" and you'll get a follow-up question every time: which D-MAX? The 3.0L Isuzu diesel has run four distinct injector generations since 2006, the part numbers don't interchange, and fitting the wrong generation means injectors that won't code to the ECU. Here's the whole family in one place, with the quickest way to identify yours.
The fastest ID: the compensation code
Build dates blur across model years, so don't trust the compliance plate alone. The definitive check is the compensation code on your existing injectors (stamped on the injector or printed on the plug tag). The first two characters tell you the generation instantly — 5F, 72, 9F or A9 as below. That's not random: on Denso injectors the first two digits of the code identify the calibration protocol for that injector family, which is why they're such a reliable fingerprint. Generation 1 — 2006–2012 pre-DPF (codes start 5F)
Denso 095000-6980 (later revisions 095000-6983 / 095000-6985 interchange directly) — Isuzu/GM 8-98011604-0 through -5. Suits D-MAX 4JJ1-TC 2006–2012, Holden Colorado RC 2008–2012 and RA7 Rodeo 2007–2008. Genuine standard set here, or +30/+50 performance options for tuned builds.
Generation 2 — 2012–2016 pre-DPF (codes start 72)
Denso 095000-8340 / 095000-9960 — Isuzu 8-98106693-0 / -1 / -2. Suits D-MAX and MU-X 4JJ1-TC 2012–2016 pre-DPF only. Multiple part numbers exist due to supersessions, but they refer to the same genuine Denso injector. Genuine set (standard or +30/+50) here.
Generation 3 — late 2016 (MY17)–2020 DPF (codes start 9F)
Denso 295050-2420 (alt. 295050-2540) — Isuzu 8-98317930-0 / 8-97435554-0. The DPF-era 4JJ1-TCX in D-MAX and MU-X. These are completely different to the pre-DPF injectors — a 2015 truck cannot use them and vice versa. Genuine standard set here, or the +50 performance set for tuned DPF builds.
Generation 4 — 2020-on 4JJ3 (codes start A9)
The current D-MAX, MU-X and BT-50 run the 4JJ3-TCX — a substantially updated engine with its own injector again, carrying A9 compensation codes on top of each injector. Genuine 4JJ3 set here, with +30 options for tuned utes.
Failing injector symptoms (all generations)
- Hard or extended cranking, especially cold
- Rough idle or single-cylinder misfire
- Black smoke and diesel knock
- Fuel economy falling away
- Fuel in the oil (rising level, thin oil) — a leaking injector, stop driving it
Diagnose before you buy
Before condemning injectors, check the cheap stuff — a blocked fuel filter and a worn suction control valve mimic injector symptoms convincingly (we've covered that fully in the 4JJ1 SCV guide, and the fix can be as simple as the long-style SCV upgrade kit). Then let the numbers decide:
- Live rail-pressure data: target and actual pressure should track each other closely at warm idle (typically sitting in the 25–35 MPa region on these Denso systems). Erratic, hunting or diverging pressure points at the SCV or filter — a rail-pressure problem affects all four cylinders, where a bad injector usually singles one out.
- Injector compensation values on the scan tool: at warm idle these should sit within roughly −5 to +5 mm³ per cylinder. A cylinder the ECU is correcting well beyond its neighbours is your suspect.
- Cranking pressure: as a rule of thumb, the system needs roughly 25–30 MPa within a few seconds of cranking before the engine will fire. Slow to build — especially hot — suggests excessive injector back-leak or a tired pump.
- Comparative leak-off test: graduated tubes on each injector return, engine warm. The injector returning noticeably more fuel than its three neighbours is your worn one. Test warm — cold, thick fuel masks wear and gives false passes.
- Cylinder cut test: a cylinder that changes nothing in idle quality or smoke when cancelled on the scan tool confirms the offender.
Doing the job right
Whatever the generation: code every injector to the ECU, fit new fire washers and seals, replace the injector lines (reused old lines are the number-one cause of post-install leaks and contamination), keep the bores spotless, and prime the fuel system before cranking.
