The Best Turbo Upgrade for Your 1KD-FTV - Hilux N70, Prado 120/150 & Hiace

Written by the team at Common Rail Cowboys — diesel performance specialists for Toyota Hilux, Prado, Hiace and Fortuner.

If you own a 1KD-FTV powered Hilux, Prado or Hiace and you've been thinking about a turbo upgrade, you're in the right place. We sell, fit and tune these turbos every single week, and we've put together this guide to help you choose the right one — without the marketing fluff.

This article covers every realistic turbo option for the 1KD-FTV, what kind of power each makes, what supporting mods you'll need, and which one we'd actually fit to our own truck. Whether you're chasing 200rwhp for towing or 280rwhp, there's a sensible upgrade path here.

How the Factory 1KD-FTV Turbo Works (And Why It Falls Over)

From factory, the 1KD-FTV runs a small VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine) turbocharger. Boost is controlled by an ECU-driven stepper motor that adjusts the angle of vanes in the turbine housing, which lets the engine make great low-down response and reasonable top end out of a tiny turbo.

The factory IHI CT16V (depending on year) is a clever piece of engineering — but it's small. Pushed beyond around 180–190rwhp and you start running into the limits:

  • Choking on airflow — the compressor wheel just can't move enough air for serious power
  • Snapped turbine shafts — push too much boost and the small turbine shaft snaps
  • Heat soak — small turbos work harder, get hotter, and shorten their own life

If you're tuning a stock turbo, it'll make decent gains up to about 180rwhp. Past that, you need a bigger turbo — full stop.

Three Real Turbo Upgrade Paths for the 1KD-FTV

Before we get into specific products, there are three realistic upgrade paths for a 1KD turbo. Pick the one that matches your goal — not the one your mate reckons is best.

Path 1: Direct VNT Replacement (180–280rwhp)

You keep the factory VNT control system, ECU stepper motor, and OEM piping. The new turbo is a drop-in upgrade with a slightly bigger compressor wheel. Easy install, factory drivability, modest power gain. Best for a daily-driver Hilux that tows, or a Prado on a long-distance touring setup. This is the sweet spot for most builds

Path 2: Bolt-On Gated Upgrade (220–280rwhp)

You ditch the factory VNT control and run a bigger gated (wastegated) turbo on the factory low-mount manifold. Requires a 1KD VNT Simulator to delete the ECU stepper motor. Bigger gains, simple boost control, more reliable than running a worn factory VNT.

Path 3: High-Mount Custom Setup (240–300rwhp+)

You replace the factory low-mount manifold with a tubular high-mount manifold and run a much bigger turbo. Serious power, but more work, more cost, and starts demanding fuel system, clutch, and bottom-end upgrades. Built for serious enthusiasts who know exactly what they want.

The Best Turbos for Each Path (What We Actually Sell)

Path 1 — Direct VNT Replacement

Genuine Toyota 1KD VNT Turbo

If your factory turbo has spat itself and you just want the truck running again — there's nothing wrong with going OEM. We stock the Genuine Toyota 1KD VNT Turbo (17201-30160) and the Prado 1KD Standard VNT Turbo. Same factory output, factory reliability, no surprises. Best for stock-tune utes or those who don't want to mess with anything. (we also have high quality aftermarket direct replacements available)

Flex VNT 44mm — Drop-In VNT Upgrade

The Flex 44mm VNT turbo is the smartest upgrade in this category. It uses the same VNT control system, factory exhaust mounting, and OEM oil/coolant lines — but with a 44mm billet compressor wheel for noticeably more airflow. Real-world results sit around 240–280rwhp with a tune, FMIC, and supporting mods. Factory drivability, no stepper motor delete required.

Power range: 240–280rwhp
Best for: Daily-driver Hiluxes and Prados, towing, those who want OEM reliability with proper power
Compatibility: Hilux N70 (KUN25/KUN26), Prado 120/150, Hiace

Path 2 — Bolt-On Gated Upgrade

This is where things get interesting. A gated turbo on a 1KD is simpler, cheaper to maintain long-term, and makes serious power. You delete the factory VNT system entirely and run on a wastegate.

FLEX R77 Pro 46mm — The 1KD Power King

This is genuinely the turbo we'd fit to our own 1KD. The FLEX R77 Pro 46mm is a true bolt-on gated upgrade that fits the factory low-mount manifold. Internal wastegate, 35psi actuator included, capable of 220–280rwhp and up to 800Nm at the wheels with proper supporting mods.

It's a noisier setup than a VNT — that classic wastegate chuff on lift-off — and it's slightly lazier in the bottom end than the Flex 44mm VNT, but it absolutely hits like a truck in the mid-range. Once it's on boost, the truck transforms.

Power range: 220–280+rwhp / up to 800Nm
Best for: Enthusiast builds, serious towing, those chasing a real performance feel
Compatibility: Hilux N70 (KUN25/KUN26), Prado 120/150, Hiace, Fortuner
Required: 1KD VNT Simulator, ECU remap, FMIC, supporting fuel system

Path 3 — High-Mount & Big Power

If you're chasing 280rwhp+ and you're prepared to do the supporting work, here's where it gets serious.

FLEX F66 High-Mount Turbo Kit

The FLEX F66 High-Mount Turbo Kit is a complete top-mount turbo solution for the N70 Hilux. Bigger compressor, bigger turbine, designed to flow serious air. This is a build, not a bolt-on — but the results are seriously impressive.

1KD Low-Mount Stainless Manifold + Custom Turbo

If you're building your own combination, our 1KD Low-Mount Stainless Manifold is a direct-fit replacement for the OEM cast manifold — better flow, better thermal management, and accepts a wide range of bolt-on turbos.

What Power Can You Actually Make?

Realistic, dyno-proven results from properly built 1KDs:

  • Stock turbo + remap: 160–185rwhp, mild torque gain
  • Flex 44mm VNT + tune + FMIC: 190–220rwhp / 450–550Nm
  • Flex 44mm VNT + +50 nozzles / injectors + tune + FMIC + 3" exhaust: 250–280rwhp / 650–750Nm
  • Flex R77 Pro 46mm + +50 nozzles + SCV upgrade + tune + FMIC + 3" exhaust: 270–280rwhp / 750–800Nm
  • F66 high-mount + full fuel system: 300rwhp+

Past 280rwhp, the gearbox, clutch and bottom end become the limiting factors — not the turbo. If you're chasing those numbers, budget for a heavy-duty clutch (NPC 850Nm or similar), and a proper fuel system.

Supporting Mods — What You Actually Need

A turbo on its own does very little. Here's what we always recommend pairing with any 1KD turbo upgrade:

Fuel System

Air System

Engine Internals (For 280rwhp+ Builds)

Tuning & Boost Control

Driveline (Don't Forget This)

  • Once you're past ~250rwhp, the factory clutch starts slipping. Plan for a heavy-duty clutch upgrade.
  • The R151F gearbox doesn't love big torque numbers either — be sensible with how you tune it.

Common Questions We Get Every Week

Q: Will a turbo upgrade alone wake my 1KD up?
A: Without a tune, no. The ECU runs factory boost targets and fuelling. You need a remap to take advantage of any new turbo.

Q: Do I have to delete the VNT to fit a bigger turbo?
A: Only if you're going to a gated turbo. A direct-fit VNT upgrade like the Flex 44mm uses the factory ECU control unchanged. A gated turbo (R77 Pro, F66 etc) needs the 1KD VNT Simulator module.

Q: Will it pass rego?
A: Turbo modifications can affect compliance. We sell these for off-road and competition use — check your state regulations and insurer before fitting.

Q: Is bigger always better?
A: No. A 50mm turbo on a stock Hilux makes for a laggy, frustrating truck. The 1KD-FTV is a 3.0L diesel — you want a turbo sized to the engine and your power goal, not the biggest one you can find.

Q: Hilux vs Prado vs Hiace — same turbo?
A: Yes, generally. The 1KD-FTV is the same engine across all three platforms (with minor calibration differences). The Flex R77 Pro 46mm and Flex 44mm VNT both fit Hilux N70, Prado 120/150, and Hiace.

Q: How long does a turbo upgrade take to install?
A: Most workshops budget 6–10 hours for a bolt-on turbo install on a 1KD, plus dyno tuning time. DIY installs are absolutely possible if you're mechanically capable.

Q: What's the cheapest path to 250rwhp?
A: Flex 44mm VNT + +30 nozzles + FMIC + 3" exhaust + tune. That combo, done properly, will reliably make 240–260rwhp without breaking the bank.

Our Recommendation — What We'd Actually Fit

If you came to us tomorrow with a 1KD Hilux and wanted the best upgrade for the money, here's what we'd say:

For a daily-driver tow vehicle: Flex 44mm VNT + +30 nozzles + FMIC + tune. Roughly 250rwhp, factory drivability, zero compromise on towing manners.

For an enthusiast build: Flex R77 Pro 46mm + VNT simulator + +50 nozzles + SCV upgrade + FMIC + 3" exhaust + heavy-duty clutch + tune. 270–290rwhp, hits like a truck, sounds the part.

For the keen tinkerer chasing 300rwhp+: F66 high-mount kit + full fuel system + bottom-end work + serious clutch + custom tune. Big project, big rewards.
